The front side of the display has a thin dark color border within the frame. The panel is 24” but only 23.8” is viewable. There is an Energy star sticker pasted on the top right side indicating that the display’s energy consumption is 59 KWh per year. The unit employs an AH-IPS panel making its viewing angles to be as wide as 178°/178° (H/V). The ratio is 16:9. The optimal resolution is 1920 x 1080 aka Full HD. It has the brightness of 250 cd/m². The contrast ratio is 1000:1. The response time is 4ms (gray to gray) with backlight life of 30,000 Hrs (minimum). There are 16.7M colors on it. The panel surface has 3H Hard Coating on it and is an Anti-Glare type. The unit has floating design frameless bezel implying the viewing with no borders.

This unit draws power of 100-240V AC (50/60Hz) with consumption of 21W under a standard mode. With Conserve mode on, it takes a power of 15W and with 18W with the Optimized mode. These modes can be accessed through the OSD menu. Tilt support is in the range of 17° ~ -5°. This unit features flicker-free technology and blue light filter. Both, when combined, would reduce the strain on the eyes during the extended period of usage. The ViewSonic offers exclusive Low EMI products. The bottom of the panel has a silver or chrome-like frame with salient features of the display printed in iconic format. It is IPS panel with low EMI, flicker-free and Blue Light filter etc. The bottom right side has 6 symbols on it with the rightmost being the power one. View Sonic is printed in the middle.

We have an HDMI port, a VGA port, and a Display Port as well which is a bit surprising as this display has a refresh rate of 60Hz and it is not a 4k panel either. There are two audio ports as well. This monitor has dual speakers of 3W.

Pic 14 Copy 1

There are two stickers pasted on the right side with the serial no, model no and some other info printed on them. The unit is made in China. Unit’s fabrication date is 27-01-2017.

There are six buttons under the sticker side. They are not implemented on the Chrome border. There is a LED on the chrome frame on the left side of these buttons which light up when in action showing the power state of the unit.

Pic 17 Copy 1

There is a mounting provision in the middle on the lower side of the unit. This is where the unit’s stand is installed. The stand is beautifully crafted in chrome like design. It is almost a triangle with the ViewSonic printed in the black color on the front side. The holder is attached to the base using a screw. There are rubber mounts on the underside of the base to avoid scratches on the surface where the unit will be placed on.

OSD Menu

Having discussed the features and design, it is time to look at the menu of the monitor and see what it offers to the users. Like I mentioned earlier that there are 6 buttons on the underside of the bottom frame of the unit. Looking at from the front side, they are not implemented on the chrome like frame on the front so the user would have to extend the hand towards the black border area to access these. Though not a big complaint but not a convenient implementation either.

Pressing the first button will power on/off the unit and the LED light on its right side will light up accordingly. Pressing the second button will load the first menu option.

Options are View Mode, Contrast/Brightness, Input Signal, Main Menu, Exit. This is a short version of the main menu.

The view mode has 7 predefined presets for the user convenient. It includes Standard, Gaming, Web, Movie, Text modes.

Let’s take a look at the main menu now. It has a graphical interface with total 6 main options to navigate through. The first one is the Input Signal. The second one is the Audio Adjust submenu. Next up is the View Mode that we have already discussed above. Next is the Color Adjust from where the user can select the predefined settings for the color temperature, color space, and color range. Next is the manual image adjust from where the sharpness can be controlled. Next is the Startup Menu with various options. The Eco Mode has the Standard, Optimize, Conserve options. Each option has different power consumption rating that we have already discussed.

Calibration Testing

To test the calibration of the unit, I used the Eizo testing. This test suite includes 13 tests to check the different aspects of the display like Pattern testing to check the image quality. To pass this test, I had to fine tune the settings. Then we have Defective pixel testing using the black/white/red/green/blue background. The unit does not have any bad pixel. Next is the Uniformity testing which checks the uniformity of the image using various gray scales. The unit passed this test. Next up is the Color Distance test. There is a rectangle in the middle of the screen. The background of the entire window is a uni-color and the rectangle has the same color. Idea is to test the unit’s capability to display the same colors yet keep them differentiable. The unit passed on the red and blue colors but failed on the green color. Next up was the Gradient testing which the unit passed. Next up was the Sharpness testing using the black text on the white background and vice versa. The unit passed this test. Next up was the Gamma testing in which the logo’s grayscale needs to be changed to make it blend into the background to the greatest possible extent. The unit came out moderate one on this testing. The last one was the response time which is actually used to compare two display units in reference.

Personal Experience

The monitor was easy to setup and it definitely has got bold yet stylish looks on it through the color settings, out of the box, were not to my liking. I would suggest the users spend some time with the OSD to find the optimal settings for one’s particular taste. In terms of the color temperature, the Bluish and the Cool were too bluish for my taste and warm was putting too much yellowish in the display colors. Either spend time with the User Color which is obviously tedious or stick with the Native color option. Out of the box, the Sharpness is not there and the display is dull. Don’t start with the Contrast and Brightness but with the sharpness which is available in the Manual Image Adjust sub-menu. Then work on the Contrast and Brightness in tandem till you get the settings specific for your taste.

I have tested all the game presets during the gaming. Gamer 1 to 3 profiles have low to moderate brightness level and it is like gaming in dark with these profiles. FPS1 has brightness overdone and it is not playable with. Only FPS2 and MOBA gave a better balance between the sharpness, brightness and the contrast and out of these two I would pick MOBA any time.

My overall experience after setting the panel up was pleasant and comfortable. I have been using it for some time to see how it goes and it was all good though mind you, going to 1080P resolution after using higher resolutions is not that convenient. The panel was tested with the GeForce GTX 1080 FE and using their DSR factor I even played at 4k gaming. It was a smooth gameplay. I have used it while writing reviews and doing routine desktop use and ViewSonic has definitely delivered a cost-effective solution with the IPS panel.
