Introduction

CRYORIG was established in 2013 and they have for sure come a long way in terms of providing some cool cooling solutions in the PC market. Their specialty is in the cooling solutions for more than anything else hence we can see their main product lines carrying the air coolers, liquid coolers, fans, and related accessories.

The CRYORIG showcased their new single tower cooler back in 2018 during the CES. They have finally released this cooler along with the new fans Crona RGB! Crona back in 2018 would not have been a picky name but it does in 2020! Anyhow, I digress, today I will be taking a look at their new flagship cooler in a single tower configuration. They have named it R5. The cooler has a single heatsink with dual XF140 fans on it. The cooler has 6 copper heat pipes each of 6mm thickness packed inside an aluminum fin stack comprising of 48 fins. This cooling solution is rated to handle the TDP of 200W. The CRYORIG R5 is compatible with Intel: 2066, 2011(-3), 1150, 1151, 1155, 1156, 1200, and AMD FM1, FM2/+, AM2/+, AM3/+, AM4 sockets.

Closer Look

The CRYORIG R5 is a single tower premium cooling solution from the manufacturer. Here is what CRYORIG is saying about their cooler, “The CRYORIG R5 comes with 6 heat pipes offering the fast heat conduction as R1. You could enjoy the best cooling effect from CRYORIG Single Tower Air Cooler. R5 inherits not only R1 design but also its Performance.”

Heatsink

It is time to take a look at the cooler.

Cryorig R5 8 Copy

The dimension of the cooler is 97.8x140x162.8mm (LxWxH) where 162.8mm is the overall height of the cooler. The weight of the cooler is 892g with the fans and 580g without fans. The CRYORIG R5 is compatible with Intel: 2066, 2011(-3), 1200, 1150, 1151, 1155, 1156< and AMD FM1, FM2/+, AM2/+, AM3/+, AM4 sockets. The cooler is rated to handle the TDP of 200W. There is no black color coating on the R5 heatsink which we observe on the R1 Ultimate.

Cryorig R5 11 Copy

One thing I must appreciate about this cooler is the looks of it. This cooler out of the box is quite a show with its gray and white/black accent. The fans’ gray color frame goes hand-in-hand with the black color of the heatsink the cover. We can spot a black color metallic cover on the top. It is not covering the top entirely and leaving the terminating ends of the heat pipes uncovered. There is a hole in the middle. This is where the hex wrench will be inserted through when installing the cooler.

Cryorig R5 9 1 Copy

The front and rear sides are identical in layout. I have removed the fans to take a picture of the heatsink. The fans need not be removed for the installation of the cooler. The front portion of the fin stack has 48 fins with a gap of 2mm between any two fins and a thickness of 0.4mm per fin. Thus we have a lower dens fin stack. The fins are jointed in the middle of the fin stack. CRYORIG is using its patented DirectCompress Soldering technique to solder both portions of the fin stack with the copper heat pipes. According to CRYORIG, this technique results in 10% more surface area for faster heat transfer. The heat pipes are making maximum contact inside the fin stack at an equal distance.

Cryorig R5 10 Copy

The left and right sides of the heatsink are identical. The fan can be installed on the front side using the black/white cover. The rear fan is installed directly on the heatsink for which there is an inset portion right next to the jointed assembly.

Cryorig R5 10 1 Copy

The heatsink itself does not have an offset design. The mounting hardware on the base makes this an offset design. The plastic clip side should be facing the DIMM slots for maximum clearance.

Cryorig R5 12 Copy

The above picture shows the cross-section of the heatsink. The overall design is symmetric.

Cryorig R5 13 Copy

The installation of the R5 is quite different from the standard or other coolers mounting mechanism in the market. This is what differentiates the R5 proposition and CRYORIG’s claim of single-handed installation. They have provided a crossbar on the base of the cooler. This bar has a metal clip ending on one side (rear side of the heatsink), and plastic clips with retention spring on the front side. There is a screw in the middle of the bar. We will cover the installation later on.

Cryorig R5 15 Copy

The CRYORIG R5 has 6 copper heat pipes in nickel coating. These pipes have 6mm thickness. The tooling job is on the money here.

Cryorig R5 14 Copy

The CRYORIG R5 has a C1100 pure copper base muck like the R1 Ultimate. There is a warning sticker pasted on the base.

Cryorig R5 16 Copy

The base has a dimension of approximately 39x43mm. The finishing is not mirrored polish as the surface seems to be quite rough.

Cryorig R5 19 Copy

The CRYORIG has provided two covers with the R5. They are in black and white colors. I am not sure if they are compatible with other CRYORIG coolers or not.

Fans

The CRYORIG has provided two XF140 fans with this cooler. Here are the specifications of the Fans:

Dimension 140x140x24.5mm

Cryorig R5 17 Copy

The XF140 fan has 11 blades. The left and rightmost sides of each blade has glossy black coating whereas the rest of the area is in matte black color. The center has a sticker on it with a CRYORIG brand logo in the middle. One smart design aspect is the arrow symbols on each side of the gray color frame. Two symbols on opposite sides show the direction of the airflow whereas the other two show the direction in which the blades spin. There are black color anti-vibration pads on the mounting corners.

Cryorig R5 18 Copy

Both fans have a 4-arms assembly on the backside holding the motor and blades to the frame. The frame of the fans is made of plastic and is quite sturdy. One of the arms is wider as it has a channel for wires passing. There is a latch as well to stop falling off the wires from the channel. The speed of the fan is printed on the sticker pasted in the middle.

The fans are powered by a 4-pin PWM connector which is in black color. The cable has a mesh on it though not a sleeve.

Here are the pictures of the cooler.

Installation

Since the cooler is tested on the Intel LGA2011(v3) socket, here are the steps needed for the installation on this socket. This is by far the easiest installation that I have ever seen on any CPU air cooler.

Cryorig R5 I1 Copy

Install the Intel LGA20xx standoffs on the pre-drilled mounting holes around the socket.

Cryorig R5 I2 Copy

Place the Quick Seg Mounting bracket on the standoffs. Secure the brackets using 4x small size thumb nuts. Apply the thermal paste.

Cryorig R5 I5 Copy

Peel off the protective cover from the base of the cooler. Place the metal clip on the crossbar under the raised center of the Quick Seg mounting bracket.

Cryorig R5 I3 Copy

Press the plastic clip. The lower portion of the clip will hook to the underside of the mounting bracket’s central portion.

Cryorig R5 I4 Copy

The cooler is secured on the socket. All that you would need to do is to use the supplied hex wrench to screw in the crossbar and call it a day.

Clearance

The height of the CRYORIG R1 Ultimate is 162.8mm. You can use the PCPartPicker to check the compatibility of the cooler with respect to the chassis. As a general rule, your chassis should have a minimum of 163mm or so clearance for this CPU Cooler height.

Cryorig R5 C1 Copy

Even on quad-channel DIMM motherboard, there is no clearance issue for any height RAM with this cooler.

Cryorig R5 C2 Copy

The above picture is showing exactly that.

Testing Methodology

The Testbed configuration is:

  • Asus Rampage V Edition 10
  • Intel i7 6850k
  • CORSAIR Vengeance 2x8GB @ 2666MHz
  • Colorful iGame GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB
  • Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD
  • Cooler Master MWe 650W Gold PSU
  • Custom test bench

The following software were used for testing and monitoring.

  • Asus Real Bench v 2.56
  • Real Temp GT v 3.70

Here is the settings table for testing:

Intel OC Voltage (V) 1.210
OC Clock (MHz) 4000 all cores
Turbo Boost Disabled
C-States Disabled
Speed Step Disabled
Thermal Paste Noctua NT-H1
Test Run Time 60 minutes
Idling Time 15 minutes
Fan Speed Manually set to run at 100% PWM cycle and Auto PWM.

A stress test run is made for the first time after the cooler’s installation. The duration of the test is 60 minutes. After this run, the PC is shut down for a minimum of 15 minutes. Actual testing is done afterward. This gives enough time for the thermal paste bonding. Please, keep in mind that cure time varies from thermal paste to thermal paste. We are using Noctua NT-H1 on our test bench for all the coolers testing. This will ensure the standardization and mitigate any performance benefit that may come using the supplied thermal paste. Delta temperatures are reported on the graphs (Delta Temp = Average of all cores’ max temps – ambient temp). The testing is done on an open-air bench system. Once inside the chassis, the temperatures are expected to rise and would largely depend upon the optimal airflow inside the chassis.

Not every run of the stress test may yield the same result. This could well be due to many factors like mounting pressure, thermal paste application, varying ambient temperature. Not to mention the silicon differences even among the same category of the chips. Hence, it is pertinent to mention the testing methodology along with the specifics.

Let’s take a look at the results.

Results

4.0

We have tested Noctua NH-U14S, NH-U12A, and Reeven Ouranos along with the CRYORIG R5 since we are measuring the performance of 140mm size coolers. The NH-U12A is included as it was said to be giving the performance level of 140mm size coolers. The R5 is behind these coolers with a maximum of 2.4°C margin. All three coolers were in the range of 28 to 29°C margin whereas the R5 was doing 30.87°C. Tests were repeated three times to verify the result.

4.0 Auto

On Auto PWM settings, the XF140 fans were reaching the 1300 RPM mark hence there is no obvious difference in thermal performance between 100% PWM duty cycle and Auto. On 100% PWM cycle, one fan was doing 1480 RPM and the second one was doing 1418 RPM.

Noise

The sound meter was showing the noise level of the cooler to be 50 dB(A) with an ambient sound level of 32 dB(A).

Conclusion

CRYORIG has finally released the new flagship cooler in a single tower configuration named R5. Rated for a cooling capacity of 200W TDP, this cooler has a dimension of 97.8x140x162.8mm (LxWxH) where 162.8mm is the overall height of the cooler. The weight of the cooler is 892g with the fans and 580g without fans. The CRYORIG R5 is compatible with Intel: 2066, 2011(-3), 1200, 1150, 1151, 1155, 1156, and AMD FM1, FM2/+, AM2/+, AM3/+, AM4 sockets.

The CRYORIG R5 has a new revamped design and the company has yet delivered another beautiful cooler in their arsenal of cooling products. The heatsink may appear to resemble the R1 Ultimate but it is different. The heatsink has 48 aluminum fins. Each fin has 0.4mm thickness and there is a gap of 2mm between any two fins. The fin stack is not dense and the overall dimension actually makes it lesser in thickness as compared to the competition. It has 6x copper heat pipes finished in nickel coating. Each pipe has a thickness of 6mm. The complete assembly is soldered. Much like the R1 Ultimate, the heatsink has a white color cover on it. CRYORIG has also provided a black color cover in the box to color coordinate the build’s theme. The cooler has the same CU1100 copper base.

The CRYORIG has provided two XF140 fans with this cooler. Their dimension is 140x140x25.4mm. The power rating of a fan is 1.92W using 0.16A at 12VDC. The user can optionally install a third fan as well for which a set of clips is provided in the accessory box. These fans are rated for up to 1300±10% RPM speed at a maximum of 76 CFM airflow and 1.44 mmH₂O static pressure rating. Both fans have anti-vibration mounts on the mounting corners. These are the same fans we have seen on the R1 Ultimate.

The CRYORIG R5 has zero RAM and PCIe interference. The height of the cooler is 162.8mm. Keep that in mind when buying cooler or chassis as chassis should have clearance for this height of the cooler. The installation of this cooler is indeed the most convenient I have ever seen and CRYORIG’s claim of single-handed installation is not without truth.

The MSRP of CRYORIG R5 is USD 85 at the time of the review. This is a steep price for the performance of this cooler. The user can get a total of 6 years warranty by registering their cooler with CRYORIG. 6 years of warranty makes this cooler competitive though pricing is subjective. Once again we have a beautiful design from the company. The aesthetics, universal clearance, convenient installation, and nice performance are the key traits of CRYORIG R5.

We are thankful to CRYORIG for giving us the opportunity to review their R5 CPU Air Cooler.
