Nvidia issues urgent firmware update for RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 to fix black screen bug

Nvidia issues urgent firmware update for RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 to fix black screen bug

Just days after launch, Nvidia’s newly released GeForce RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti graphics cards have run into an unexpected issue—black screens on reboot. This rare problem has prompted Nvidia to release an official firmware update, aiming to fix the issue before it causes wider concern.

Although the cards had already been surrounded by controversy over their performance and pricing, this new bug added fuel to the fire. It was late Friday afternoon when Nvidia quietly posted a notice on its website. According to the update, some users were experiencing black screens after rebooting their systems, particularly when using older motherboards.

The issue first appeared on Nvidia’s own support forums. Users described situations where their monitors would lose signal after restarting the system. This made the PC appear to be dead, even though it was still running in the background. The only fix was a full shutdown and power-on cycle.

Nvidia explained that the problem stemmed from compatibility issues between the RTX 5060/RTX 5060 Ti cards and some motherboard SBIOS configurations. The bug was overlooked during internal testing, likely because it occurs only in very specific environments.

To fix this, Nvidia has released a tool—the NVIDIA GPU Firmware Update Tool—that checks if your graphics card needs the update. If your card is affected, the tool offers the option to apply the fix automatically.

How to apply the firmware update on RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti

If you’re facing black screen issues after reboot, follow these steps to update your firmware:

  1. Completely shut down your system before starting the process.
  2. Ensure your motherboard BIOS is updated to the latest version.
  3. Confirm that your PC is using UEFI boot mode, not Legacy or CSM mode.
  4. If your system won’t boot normally, try using integrated graphics or a secondary GPU to access Windows.
  5. Once the system is up and running, download the NVIDIA GPU Firmware Update Tool.
  6. Close all applications before running the tool.
  7. Make sure your system does not have pending Windows updates in the background.

After running the tool, it will check whether your graphics card requires the firmware patch and walk you through the rest of the process.

For users whose motherboards do not support UEFI boot mode, Nvidia recommends contacting the GPU manufacturer for a version of the update that works in Legacy mode.

Already fixed on newer RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti cards

According to Nvidia, partners have already applied the fix to new batches of the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti. This means cards arriving at retail stores from this week onwards are unlikely to face the issue. However, if you bought your GPU before this fix was rolled out, it’s recommended that you run the tool to avoid possible problems.

This firmware patch comes at a critical time, as Nvidia faces increased pressure to deliver a stable and polished experience for its new generation of GPUs. While the black screen issue was rare, its effect was severe enough to merit an urgent update.
