Sony plans smart delay for PlayStation 6 launch to ensure better value

Sony is reportedly planning to delay the launch of its next console, the PlayStation 6, to 2028 or even 2029. While many fans expected the next wave of consoles in 2027, the company now seems to be taking a more careful and long term approach.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony Group Corp. is rethinking its timeline because of rising memory prices and supply chain pressure. The cost of DRAM has increased a lot, and securing large amounts of memory for millions of consoles has become difficult.

Why Sony may delay PlayStation 6

The main reason behind this possible delay is memory cost. Modern consoles need large amounts of high speed memory. Recent rumours suggest the PlayStation 6 could use up to 30GB of GDDR7 memory. That is a big jump compared to older systems. Getting this much memory for each unit is not easy in today’s market.

The semiconductor supply chain is also tight. Only companies with strong and long term supply deals can secure enough memory chips. If Sony cannot lock in enough supply at a stable price, launching in 2027 could be risky.

Instead of rushing, Sony may want to wait until costs become more stable. This could help the company avoid high retail prices and keep the console affordable for players.

Recently, AMD confirmed that the next generation Xbox is expected in 2027. That means Microsoft could launch its new console earlier than Sony. If Sony moves to 2028 or 2029, Microsoft might have a head start of one or even two years.

However, Sony has often focused on long term strategy rather than speed. The current PlayStation 5 still has strong sales and a large player base. By delaying the next console, Sony can continue supporting the PS5 while preparing a more powerful and stable PlayStation 6.

Although some fans may feel disappointed, this move could be a smart decision. Waiting for better memory supply and stable pricing may help Sony deliver stronger performance and better value at launch.

For now, nothing is officially confirmed. But if these reports are correct, the PlayStation 6 may arrive later than expected, giving Sony more time to build a solid next generation system.
