The long-forgotte action-adventure game Captain Blood has made its way to modern platforms after more than a decade of development struggles. Released on May 6, 2025, the quirky title is giving nostalgia for gamers who remember the early 2000s’ action-adventure scene. And, O.K., while the game may not measure up to modern standards, its revival brings to light the important trend of game preservation.
Originally developed by Akella, the studio behind the popular Pirates of the Caribbean game, Captain Blood began its journey back in 2003. Intended as a gritty hack-and-slash game inspired by God of War, it was designed for release on the original Xbox and PC by 2006. However, delays and a change in platforms to Xbox 360 were just the beginning of the setbacks. In 2010, the game’s publisher, Playlogic, went bankrupt, effectively halting the development process and leaving Captain Blood in limbo.
For over a decade, it seemed like the game would never see the light of day. Yet, thanks to the tireless efforts of SNEG, a publisher dedicated to that aforementioned game preservation, Captain Blood has been brought back to life. SNEG worked with the original developers, who now operate under Seawolf Studio, to finish the game exactly as it would have appeared if it had been released in the late 2000s. Aside from some necessary tweaks for modern compatibility, the game remains largely unaltered, staying true to its original vision.
This might not be a hit with all gamers. Nonetheless, several players are expected to enjoy the game’s fresh experience. This near-certain expectation cuts across most forms of online entertainment that involve platforms offering users variety. In a recent interview, SNEG co-founder Oleg Klapovskiy addressed these criticisms, acknowledging that Captain Blood would struggle to score highly by modern standards. “If you assess the game by modern standards, I think I would put it at a very low score,” he said. “I would say, three? Four?”
However, Klapovskiy was quick to clarify that Captain Blood wasn’t meant to be judged by 2025’s gaming benchmarks. “It has all its charm, all its flaws, and all the vibes are from that era. If you assess it as a game from that time, I would assess it as a 7.5/10 game,” he explained. This approach certainly resonates with many players, as evidenced by the 68 “Very Positive” reviews on Steam.
It seems, fans of retro gaming and pirate-themed adventures, Captain Blood has found its place in the hearts of those who are willing to embrace its imperfections.
