What makes a good gaming chair?

There are many gaming chairs on the market, so how do you choose a good one? This article will explain the key qualities a gaming chair needs to have, so you can choose the perfect one, regardless of what you will be using it for. Contrary to what the name implies, a gaming chair is not only for gaming. Instead, it is a good all-around chair for performing activities at your computer, whether it is gaming, gambling, work, or watching videos. If you are playing slots, for instance, you will have a better time sitting in an excellent gaming chair. Slots are available for free these days. They are called SweepSlots, and they allow you to play using virtual currencies.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics is probably the most important factor to take into account when choosing a gaming chair. Keeping your body in a natural position is not only crucial for comfort but also for keeping yourself healthy after spending many hours playing games. First of all, a gaming chair should provide proper lumbar support. The lumbar region is the lower part of your back that naturally curves inwards. Sitting in a chair with a straight backrest for extended periods can cause problems with your spine. The backrest of a chair should therefore follow the natural curvature of your back to prevent these issues from arising. Armrests serve the purpose of alleviating stress on your shoulders and neck. They should be positioned in such a way that your upper and lower arms form a 90-degree angle, and that your elbows are always resting on top of them. Soft materials are preferable for armrests as they will not leave indentations on your skin. A seat with a waterfall edge is recommended to promote good blood circulation. This type of seat is characterized by a downward curve in the front, which serves to decrease pressure on the thighs.

Adjustability

As gaming chairs are factory-produced, they cannot be tailored to each individual. This is where adjustability comes in. Once you have chosen a chair with a good overall design, you have to adjust the relative positions and orientations of the parts to suit your build perfectly, and facilitate a good posture while sitting for prolonged periods. Often, people become aware of their bad posture and correct it for a brief time, only to revert to slouching once they stop focusing on it. The gaming chair’s design and the positions of its components should allow you to sit in a neutral position without having to think about it. Essentially, the more movable parts a chair has, the better, as this will allow you to better adjust it to your body.

Adjustable height is a must-have. The height of the chair should bring your eyes on level with the screen to reduce strain on your neck and eyes. Your thighs should be parallel to the floor, and your feet touching the floor (unless the chair has a footrest).

The ability to move the small back cushion along the vertical axis is needed, so that you can place it precisely behind the hollow of your lower back.

In order to create the ideal armrest position, as has been described earlier, the height of the armrest needs to be adjustable. There are some gaming chair models that have what is called 4D armrests, with adaptable armrest height, depth, width, and rotation.

The ability to recline in the chair is also a valuable feature. It is recommended to set an angle between 125 degrees and 135 degrees between the seat and the backrest, given that the chair has a headrest. In the absence of a headrest, an interval of 110 degrees to 115 degrees is suggested. A 180-degree recline is also possible on certain gaming chair models, giving you the ability to take a rest between gaming sessions.

Materials

Choosing the materials of the gaming chair is not as straightforward as different materials have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Padding

While high-density foam is more durable and will retain its shape for longer, low-density foam might be more comfortable for some people. Certain gaming chairs have padding made from cold foam. This is a type of high-density foam that has, until recently, been exclusively used in the production of car seats and theater seats. Cold foam is produced in a process called cold-curing, which traps air inside the foam, granting it the ability to retain its original shape for exceptionally long periods. Memory foam is another option. First developed for use in NASA’s spaceship seats, memory foam has the property of molding itself in reaction to body heat. It is known for its pressure-relieving quality and high durability.

Upholstery

Leather is a tried and true material that has been used for many purposes throughout history. It is durable and does not cause excessive sweating. Its downsides are that it can stain in contact with moisture, and maintenance can be inconvenient, as it needs to be treated with leather protectors to keep it from being damaged. Faux leather, such as PU leather, on the other hand, is easier to maintain and is also more affordable; however, it does not last as long, and you will start sweating more quickly when sitting in a chair with faux leather upholstery. There is also fabric, which offers even better air circulation than leather, yet it is even more difficult to maintain.

Weight-carrying components

The frame of most gaming chairs is made from some kind of metal. Stainless steel is a common and robust option. One alternative is an aluminum alloy. Aluminum is lighter than steel, so the chair will be easier to move around; however, steel is a stronger option. Plastic frames are not recommended as they are prone to breaking.

The stand is made from either steel or aluminum in essentially all gaming chairs. Once again, steel is the heavier yet more durable choice.

Much like the frame and the stand, the wheelbase is often made from metal; however, there exist several types of polypropylene that are suitable for the construction of the wheelbase.

Lastly, the rollers should be either made from rubber or rubberized. Buying a gaming chair with plastic wheels is not advised, as they lack the necessary load-bearing capacity.

Final thoughts

Choosing the correct gaming chair is integral not only for achieving the best gaming experience but also for maintaining good health. In summary, a good gaming chair has an ergonomic design, adjustable parts, and is made out of materials that suit your needs best.
