Sony brings exciting God of War origin story and powerful trilogy remake news
Sony’s latest State of Play event delivered great news for fans of God of War. The showcase revealed not just one, but two major updates for the long-running action series. A brand-new origin story game is now available, and a remake of the original trilogy is officially in early development.
The first surprise is God of War: Sons of Sparta. This new title is a 2.5D action adventure game that explores the early life of Kratos. It launched right away for the PlayStation 5 after its reveal.
Unlike the recent 3D entries, this game follows a side-scrolling style, similar to classic Metroidvania games. It focuses on Kratos during his training years at the Agoge, where young Spartan boys were raised to become warriors. Players will also see his bond with his brother Deimos, which plays an important role in the story.
The game was written by the same team at Santa Monica Studio that worked on God of War and God of War Ragnarök. Development was handled by Mega Cat Studios, a studio known for its experience with side-scrolling and retro-style games.
In God of War: Sons of Sparta, players use the classic Spartan sword and shield. Combat is said to be fast and skill-based. The game also introduces “Gifts of Olympus,” which give Kratos special powers during battle. These abilities add more depth and variety to fights, making the gameplay feel fresh while still keeping the spirit of the older titles.

The trailer shown during State of Play highlighted intense combat, mythological enemies, and a darker look at Kratos’s early struggles. For long-time fans, it offers a new way to understand how Kratos became the warrior seen in later games.
God of War triology remake
The second big announcement may excite fans even more. Santa Monica Studio confirmed that a full remake of the original God of War trilogy is now in very early development. While there is no release date yet, the studio made it clear that the project is real and moving forward.

The remake announcement was shared in collaboration with TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos in the Greek-era games. He also returned as the narrator in Sons of Sparta. Although the studio did not officially confirm that he will voice Kratos again in the remake, many fans believe it is likely. His presence during the announcement has created strong hope within the community.
The original trilogy helped define the action genre on PlayStation platforms. A modern remake could bring updated visuals, smoother gameplay, and improved performance while keeping the original story and tone. Since the project is still in early development, it may take time before players see gameplay or a launch window.
Overall, this State of Play has given God of War fans plenty to celebrate. A brand-new origin story is already playable, and a beloved trilogy is set to return in a modern form. For many players, this feels like an exciting new chapter for Kratos and the franchise as a whole.
