Fable gets a fresh open world with humour and player choice

At Xbox Developer_Direct, Playground Games finally shared a deep look at Fable, the long-awaited return of one of Xbox’s most loved RPG series. The team confirmed that the game will launch this autumn and made it clear that this is a fresh start for Fable, built with modern ideas but strong respect for its roots.

This new Fable is a full reboot. According to Ralph Fulton, the game’s GM and Game Director, the studio wanted freedom to create a new Albion without being tied to old stories or timelines. While the past games still exist and are loved, this version is designed as a new beginning that anyone can jump into.

Even so, the heart of Fable is still there. Fulton explained that the team focused on what truly defines the series. For them, Fable is not high fantasy like dark epics. Instead, it is more like a fairytale. The stories are smaller, more personal, and often about normal people whose lives are touched by magic. This idea shapes the world, the art style, and the way stories are told.

British humour also plays a huge role. The game keeps the dry, awkward, and playful comedy that fans remember. NPCs react to the player in funny and sometimes blunt ways, and the story uses a mockumentary-style camera at times to land jokes naturally. The cast includes well-known British comedians, continuing a tradition from the older games.

Fable

Fable story

The story begins in classic Fable style. You start as a child and discover your powers early on. After a time jump, you return as an adult to your home village, where a shocking event turns everyone, including your grandmother, into stone. With only a few clues and a mention of the Heroes’ Guild in Bowerstone, you are set free into the open world to find answers.

Fable 7

Albion is fully open from the moment you leave your village. There is no strict order and no blocked areas based on level. You can travel anywhere, take a job, explore towns, or even settle down and get married. The main story waits for you, allowing players to move at their own pace.

Fable 3

Combat mixes melee, ranged attacks, and magic into one smooth system. You can swing a sword and cast a spell in one motion. Enemies have clear strengths and weaknesses, and fights often involve groups that push you to think and adapt. Funny and unexpected moments, like enemies hurting each other by mistake, are kept on purpose to add chaos and humour.

Fable 6

The famous morality system has also changed. Instead of a simple good or evil bar, the game now uses reputation. What you do, and who sees you do it, shapes how people think of you. Different towns can see you in different ways, and NPCs react based on their own views. The game does not judge you, but the people of Albion certainly will.

Another major feature is the Living Population. Over 1,000 unique NPCs live real daily lives, with homes, jobs, and routines. They remember you, react to your actions, and make the world feel alive. While this system lightly connects to the main story, it is never forced, letting players focus on what they enjoy most.

With character customisation confirmed and more details promised before launch, Fable is shaping up to be a confident, charming return. It blends freedom, choice, humour, and heart, aiming to feel both new and familiar when it arrives this autumn.
